Capsule Geology

The Nome West occurrence is located on the northern slopes of Needlepoint Mountain near Pooley Creek, approximately 83 kilometres north of the community of Dease Lake.

This area is underlain by interlayered massive green andesites and tuffs interbedded with thin green to black cherts, all of which are part of the Mississippian to Upper Triassic Slide Mountain Complex. This package is preserved within the northwest-trending, southeast-plunging McDame Synclinorium.

In the region, all significant gold-bearing quartz veins are generally east- to northeast-trending and occur with similar gossan-forming quartz-carbonate-pyrite alteration zones.

A large gossan (250 by 100 metres) over the carbonate-pyrite–altered metavolcanics hosts a quartz-ankerite vein-stockwork. Veins from 1 to 3 centimetres wide are observed in outcrop. A quartz vein with visible gold was reported in 1983 but later snow cover prevented sampling.

Several rock samples taken from vuggy quartz and carbonate-altered volcanics yielded values between 0.32 and 0.54 gram per tonne gold (Assessment Report 16186).

Work History

During the 1979 field season, Cusac Industries Ltd. conducted an exploration program on a five-unit area of their Cordoba and Pete claims; a VLF-EM survey on both areas was also carried out. A bulldozer road was constructed to the Pete claims to assist in moving a drill to the Presunka's fault area. The 1979 exploration program included geological mapping, rock sampling, trenching and eight diamond drill holes, totalling approximately 600 metres. Surface and drillcore samples from the Pete vein yielded an average16.2 grams per tonne gold (Assessment Report 8634). A summary of the results from this program are reported in the Pete (MINFILE 104P 025) occurrence to the southeast.

In 1983 and 1984, the Nome claims were staked and geological mapping, soil sampling and hand trenching was completed by H. Copland; 128 soil, 3 stream and 16 rock samples were collected and sent for analyses. Also at this time, Erickson Gold Mining Corp. completed a program of geological mapping, trenching and percussion drilling on the area as the Bunny, Cordoba and Pete claims.

In 1987, geological and geochemical work was carried out by Evergrow Resources; 410 soil samples, 64 rock samples and 4 hand trenches were completed. In 1988, geological mapping and geochemical work by Sookochoff Consultants was conducted and 357 soil and 32 rock samples were collected.

In 1993, soil sampling was completed and 47 samples were sent for analyses. In 1997, Tako Resources Ltd. conducted magnetic and VLF-EM surveying (9.4 kilometres), collected 39 rock samples and hand-dug eight small trenches.

During 2008 through 2010, Hawthorne Gold Corp., later China Minerals Mining Corp., completed regional programs of geological mapping, geochemical (rock and soil) sampling and 11,657 line-kilometres of airborne magnetic, radiometric and electromagnetic surveys on the area as the Cassiar Gold property.

In 2013, China Minerals Mining Corp. completed a program of rock, silt and soil sampling on the area.

In 2019, Margaux Resources completed a program of prospecting, geological mapping and rock sampling on the area as the Cassiar Gold property. In 2020, Cassiar Gold Corp. completed a program of regional photogeological interpretation, prospecting and rock sampling on the Cassiar Gold property.
